Her story comes at a time when many South Africans are looking for inspiration to stay active and healthy, especially among older adults. The gogo’s content is also a reminder of the power of consistency and a positive attitude when it comes to wellness.
To better understand the impact of the viral video showing a 62-year-old gogo showcasing her impressive fitness routine, Briefly News reached out to personal trainer and group exercise instructor Forgy Mokalapa.
Forgy praised the gogo’s confidence and courage, calling her a role model for older people, especially women, who often face limiting beliefs around ageing and physical activity.
"I have a 69-year-old woman that I am training. She just recently joined my program, and I have never been so excited about a person joining my program like I am with her. It's revolutionary. Especially in black culture. I am proud of the gogo who's staying fit. She is not living life according to society's expectations. She is forward-thinking and understands that just because it is not popular, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. I like that for her! I admire her mindset."
She emphasised that late starts are still valuable and that older adults have much to gain from regular movement and intentional health choices.
"It can never be too late to start exercising! Keeping fit should be a lifestyle for everyone. Especially older people, because they'll be able to maintain their independence while improving their physical and mental health. This will also help them reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Keeping fit keeps a person young for a long time, and as a result, they get to live longer."
Forgy stressed the importance of community, self-compassion, and sustainable routines tailored to one's body and goals, especially later in life.
"I'd advise the gogo to keep going, but at her own pace. She must be gentle with herself and not try to keep up with younger people. Nutrition is very important too. She must keep the exercises balanced with good nutrition. Last but not least, she must try to surround herself with like-minded people so that her progress is not hindered. Signing up for fun walks & local Aerobics events is a great idea."
